Carol Poon to run in Ward 4

July 16, 2010 - By

Everyone might have missed this one, as it was apparently announced all the way at the end of June. Carol Poon has worked in the health care sector with a degree from NAIT, and is also an entrepreneur. She has two young children . Her platform consists of items like reducing urban sprawl and proper waste management. She also believes that “Calgary’s greatest resource is its people.”

Ward 4 now has 3 women running, the highest in all the wards. This is also the highest number of women contending for an open seat race. Carol Poon joins Jane Morgan and Leslie Bedard in a very crowded race. They also join Sean Chu, Michael Hartford, Tommy Low, and Curtis Kruschel in this race. While many are excited for Ward 9′s race, Ward 4 is going to be very interesting given the high number of visible minorities within this ward (which explains the increased number of visible minorities running), as well as the large number of women in this race.

Elspeth Kirk is another rumoured candidate for Ward 4, although little is known about her at this point. She will tip the [...]Read More

CalgaryLiberal.com Interviews Ward 4 Aldermanic Candidate Leslie Bedard

July 14, 2010 - By

Nation, the bleeding heart, socialist, anti-business, elitist, oilsands-hating threats-to-traditional-family-values (just kidding – love your work, Vince – disagree with a lot of it, but it’s well written & researched) over at CalgaryLiberal.com have posted a great interview with Ward 4 aldermanic candidate Leslie Bedard.

The interview runs nearly 25 minutes, and is audio only.

Go check it out!

Leslie Bedard Announces Run in Ward 4

June 24, 2010 - By

Leslie Bedard is the third female candidate to officially announce her candidacy after Jane Morgan in Ward 4 and Diane Colley-Urquhart in Ward 13. Ward 4 itself is going to be a very interesting race since it is an open seat, and now has the most number of female candidates running out of the all the races. Bedard was an English and social studies teacher at Dr. EP Scarlett and Lord Beaverbrook, and now is working on a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology. According to her press release, Bedard also believes that the timing is right for her to enter the race, and that she has a strong chance of winning the seat.

The following is the press release that Leslie Bedard’s campaign released:

Today Leslie Bedard announces her decision to run for Alderman Ward 4, in the October civic election.

Leslie, a resident in the ward was motivated to join the race by the over use of buzz-words and jargon amongst candidates. As a former English and Social Studies teacher “I have always been frustrated reading campaign materials and websites that make little sense.” What is being demonstrated with [...]Read More

Sean Chu Is In Fact Running for Calgary Ward 4 Alderman

May 18, 2010 - By

In a previous post last month, I had wondered if Sean Chu would run for Ward 4 Alderman in the 2010 Calgary Municipal Election.  I had a brief coffee today with Sean and he in fact confirmed that he is in fact running for Alderman in Ward 4.  ( The Herald also has this story online now and it will likely be in tomorrows paper.)

Sean confirmed to me that he has decided to run and will make his official announcement at the Edgemont Community Association on Thursday May 20, 2010 at 10:30am.

As per my previous post, I think that Sean’s extensive community involvement and his 17 year career as a City of Calgary Police officer prove that he would be an excellent Alderman.  Sean has agreed to do a quick interview on Calgaryrants.com in the near future, so watch for it!

The race for Ward 4 just got a little more interesting!

Newcomers in Wards 4, 11, and 12

Apparently there’s too much Starcraft and not enough hardcore civic election news, so here’s an update on just some of the newcomers into this free-for-all election.

Ward 4

Rumour has it that Sean Chu, who lost against Kent Hehr in Calgary-Buffalo, will take a stab at ward 4 this election. We’ll have to wait and see when the election approaches.

Will Sean Chu Run for Calgary Ward 4 Alderman? – Calgary Rants

Rumour also has it that George Chahal, who lost against Alderman Jim Stevenson in Ward 3, will also take a stab at ward 4. We definitely have two very strong contenders in this ward.

Ward 11

Ernest McCutcheon
– I had an Ernest McCutcheon follow me in Twitter today, and he’s indicated on his account that he’ll challenge Brian Pincott in ward 11. He’s been a project manager, sales manager, trained as an EMR, and an ordinary member of the Royal Canadian Legion. That’s all I got from his website, so hopefully we’ll get more information. In keeping with the Pokemon thing [...]Read More

Who’s running for Calgary City Council in 2010?

There sure are a lot of names coming out of the proverbial woodwork right about now saying they are going to run for Calgary City Council. Now it’s a long way off from nomination day on September 20, and everyone can change their minds still, but it’s already getting hard to figure out who is who, and who’s saying their running and who is not.

So with this in mind I decided to put together a list of everything I’ve seen reported, heard personally and have heard rumour of. I’ll try to update this list regularly as we hear or see other things. If you know of anyone missing, please just let me know and I’ll add it!

PS – Try not to read too much into the difference between “rumoured” and “declared”. At this point it doesn’t really mean much. It’s more a degree of veracity in their statements up till now that made me choose one over the other. Some however, are just rumours.

Mayor
Dave Bronconnier – Incumbent (not running)
Craig Burrows (rumoured)
Joe Connelly (rumoured)
Bob Hawkesworth (rumoured)
Kent Hehr (rumoured)
Paul Hughes (declared)
Alnoor Kassam (declared)
Jon Lord (declared)[...]Read More

Will Sean Chu Run for Ward 4 Alderman?

April 3, 2010 - By

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard a rumour recently that Sean Chu was considering a run for Ward 4 Alderman in the 2010 Calgary Civic Election!  I have had the good fortune to get to know Sean over the past few years while working together on the Calgary Hays PC Association Board and on various fundraisers.  Through my experience with working with him, I think he would make an excellent alderman!

With the departure of outgoing Ward 4 Alderman Bob Hawkesworth ( see Bob’s confirmation on his blog at http://blog.hawkesworth.com/) the race for Ward 4 will be an interesting one.  Bob has held this seat for a long time and while some feel he has done a good job,  it really is time for a change in Ward 4 in my opinion!

Sean Chu has been a City of Calgary Policy officer for over 17 years and has many years of dedicated experience in the community.  Here is a brief snapshot of some of his community work:

• Advisor to the Sunalta/Scarboro Coalition for Safer Communities which led a successful local initiative to stop a halfway house from being built close to schools in Sunalta.

• Member of the [...]Read More
